Christmas Parties 2017

This year we've had the honour to perform in a couple of Christmas parties. First one was at the stunning  Exchange Hotel (Coal Exchange Cardiff) for Dev Ops Guys Cardiff.
First time for us in this incredible venue. Very well decorated, really big main room, perfect for weddings and big events.

Yesterday we performed at the Radisson Blu Hotel Cardiff for Legal and General. We can't say thanks enough to Marc for taking care of us, the hotel staff and all the Legal and General crew for making such a great evening. We opened the night with a relaxed acoustic set while guests were having dinner. Some jazz classics, some up to date songs and a couple of Christmas songs made our set with some guests singing in their tables.
Then the band played 2 sets and what can we say... they went down a storm with the dancefloor full the whole night!

This morning we've checked our email and found this incredible words from Marc (who booked us):

We have a nice surprise for all of you (hopefully) coming by the end of this year 2017 ;)

Autumn Weddings

Hi everyone,

We haven't posted in a while because we have been busy working on a few projects that we are preparing for you all! We have a couple of acoustic videos coming up which will show how awesome our singers are and then we are preparing a big surprise for our showcase at Porter's Cardiff on the 2nd December.

In the meantime we are still busy playing at weddings. This Autumn is our busiest so far and we've had the pleasure of playing at a few new venues! The first one was the stunning Coombe Lodge in Blagdon (www.coombelodge.co.uk)

Liz and Stu celebrated their wedding at this classy venue on a Tuesday night. It turned out to be a great night with them, family and friends and our two 60 minutes sets went down a storm! With weekday weddings we always have the fear people might not be too much into dancing because... well... some of them have to go to work the day after :(   It didn't matter! Everyone was on the dancefloor up until midnight enjoying the tunes we had prepared for them.

Our second stop was at Bryngarw House in Bridgend for Ben and Kelly's wedding. So many great moments at this wedding.... We performed Can't Help Falling in Love by Elvis for their first dance, evening buffet was a curry! Living on a Prayer for about 4 times (it was the stag do's anthem!) and Dirty Dancing's tunes!

Finally, yesterday we visited Folly Farm in Bristol for Helen and John's Wedding. (https://www.follyfarm.org).  If we can find some words to describe this venue we'd say... cosy, relaxed, laid back, warm and welcoming! It feautures a small barn with a bar, very helpful staff and a great atmosphere. We learned Lionel Richie's My Destiny for their first dance and we catered our set list to our couple's taste by adding a few classic 80s tunes. Result... a great night!

That's it for now! Next week we will play at a Charity Event at Creigiau (more details on Facebook) and then we will go on to prepare some big gigs we have during Christmas :)

Stay tuned!

Partying in Cardiff!

Yesterday we played at Park House Restaurant in the centre of Cardiff. First time for us in this lovely venue with a lot of character.

Once we arrived we knew there was a party going! Our lovely couple Helen and Anthony and all their friends and family were well up for a good party. And what a gig it was! From the get go, dancefloor filled until the last song including 3 encores. Today Helen wrote this lovely 5 star review on our Facebook wall:

Wedding at Cardiff Museum

This weekend was a busy one. We played two weddings, Friday at Cardiff Museum and Saturday at De Courceys Manor. Both were loads of fun but Friday was special!

Laura and Joe got married at Cardiff Museum on Friday and they invited us to play at their wedding. Joe wanted to surprise Laura by singing their first dance: Can't Nobody Love You - Solomon Burke. Great tune!
So we organised a secret rehearsal with Joe the day before. He came around our rehearsal studio (none of his friends knew about this...) and rehearsed the first dance ready for the big day. It was so much fun!
For us, this was the highlight of the wedding. Laura didn't expect it at all! We called the couple on the dancefloor and just when they were ready to start dancing Joe step forward, grabbed the mic and started singing. He did such a great job! When he finished, he joined Laura while we jammed the song and Nicky took a couple of choruses at the end. All their friends and family joined too. The day after Joe wrote this to us:

Many thanks to you and Laura for inviting us to play at your wedding!

Meeting before the big day is a great idea because it allows us to break the ice with our clients so during the wedding we already know each other and everything feels more personal. Never hesitate on asking us for a quick chat or meeting before your wedding, we are always happy to arrange a meeting!

Also in September we have a nice surprise coming up. Stay tuned on the Soul Lotta Funk news channel!

Live from the Kingscote Barn, Tetbury

Last Saturday we travelled to Tetbury to play for James and Laura who got married at the beautiful Kingscote Barn.
This is a converted barn secretly located in a valley within the Cotswold Hills, an area declared of outstanding beauty. Just the drive down the little road to the barn was breathtaking, even with a foul weather. The barn was lit with small candles outside and inside giving it a warm welcoming look.

From the get go we felt really relaxed in there and the couple, James and Laura, took care of us in every moment. Jose met them months prior to the wedding to discuss some details with them and that really helped!

The couple had a 'no social media' policy which we thought it was great. Nobody was allowed to post on social media until the day after. Nowadays we all spend to much time on our phones and sometimes we miss good moments by trying to capture them on our phones. It's like in live concerts where you have members of the crowd looking at the actual concert through their phones. This was great, so on their first dance everyone was paying attention to James and Laura dancing to a beautiful version of Wicked Game (original by Chris Isaak).
The first dance finished followed by the chords of Free Fallin' by Tom Petty. Laura called her dad to the dancefloor... he didn't expected that at all! It was a wonderful moment and everybody joined them. And after that... we started playing, opening with Stevie Wonder's classic: Signed Sealed Delivered.
If you click on the link below, you will find 20 minutes of live footage from the second set:

We would like to thank Richard Boucher, who was covering for Joe on the bass. He brought a GoPro, took this footage and shared it. It will give you an idea of what goes on at a Soul Lotta Funk's wedding from our perspective.

We had a great time playing for James, Laura and all their friends and family. We also saw Carly and Chris who we played for on their wedding at the Rosedew Farm back two years ago.  They are now expecting a baby! Congratulations guys! So good to see you :)

We wish James and Laura all the best together! Thank you again for inviting us to play for you, it was a great night.

Oh What a Night!

Last Saturday we played for Tobi and Alice on their wedding day. Alice knows Jim our guitar player from work so they trusted us to play some tunes and keep the dancefloor moving on their most special day. Bit of pressure for us there!
This wedding was really special as it was the first African wedding we do! Shortly after finishing our soundcheck at Portland House, guests started arriving. Some family members were dressed in tradicional Nigerian clothes. Pictures we took on the night don't really make justice to their colourful dresses. The room was full of colour and smiles. Then the couple entered the room also dressed in African clothes, absolutely stunning!

After emotive speeches from Alice's father, Tobi himself and the best man, the couple did their first dance. They chose an African song and some members of their families joined them. It was such a beautiful display of joy and colour.

We played two sets with plenty of Stevie Wonder songs as the couple are big fans! Actually their second (first) dance was Knocks Me Off My Feet by Stevie. People danced to every song we played and we had great fun on stage.

There was a double buffet: homemade pizzas and tradicional Nigerian food. Everything was delicious.
Also the couple had a nice surprise when two of their friends asked us to go on stage to play a very special song: ''You'll Never Walk Alone''. Tobi is from Liverpool so it was the perfect song. Sarah our singer joined Tobi's friends on stage and everybody started singing... it was one of the greatest moments of the night.

After we finished our last song people asked for one more! So we played ''Oh, what a night''. It was the first time we played it live so we didn't really know how it was going to flow. Django started on drums and when Jose played the intro piano riff people screamed! They loved it! Such a positive suprise. Definitely will stay on our sets.

Oh, what a night! :)

See you on the next one

A different wedding

Gary and Rose have just posted on our Facebook page:

We had a great time with them! This wedding was so much fun from the planning to the main day. It was also amazing to see an incredible dancing routine on their first dance (which featured a crazy medley from swing to metal to Ed Sheeran!...)... yes it sounds weird but when they started dancing it was like jaw-dropping (both of them are pro-dancers). Amazing!

From Soul Lotta Funk's team we wish them all the best!

Balance of April 2017

Hi everyone,

here we are at the end of April 2017. It has been an incredible month for us, we have partied with lots of new people and we'll hold great memories of the weddings we've been a part of for a long time.

We started Easter travelling to Cardigan to play for Rachael and Sam, our lovely couple who got married at Hammet House.

Stunning isn't it? Check their website for all information about the venue (http://www.hammethouse.co.uk)  The best thing about the place though? their staff. We got treated like rock-stars. In every moment they took care that we were well fed, that we had drinks and that we had time enough to do our soundcheck etc. Great bunch of guys!

About the wedding, Rachael our lovely bride wrote this on our facebook:

Thank you and Sam for inviting us to play! Also thanks to your dad, because he is the MAN!

We arrived back in Cardiff at 4am, tired but with a great smile on our faces. Rock and Roll ;)

Then, just the day after, we played for James and Stacey at Canada Lodge. We have played there a few times so we feel like at home. It is a stunning venue just outside Cardiff with great views over a fishing lake.

And what can we say about our lovely couple? They love live music and so do their friends (bit of extra pressure there with a few musicians present in the room! ;)   We had a blast, so much that we came back and did a cheeky extra 30 minutes set just because... why not?

May is going to be a bit quieter however we have a great road trip at the end of the month. All the way down to Falmouth, can't wait!

First wedding of April!

Hi everyone!

Here we are in April 2017. Time goes so fast... And with April and the spring come the first weddings of the season. This Saturday we had the honour of playing for Gareth and Laura at their wedding at Pencoed House.
http://www.pencoedhouseestate.co.uk
This venue is a cosy little barn on the outskirts of Cardiff. It is a well known wedding venue around but for us it was the first time we played there. We loved it! Their staff and their house DJ Paul are very friendly and helpful and overall it was a great night.

We are so looking forward to be playing there again in a near future!
